IS THERE JUSTICE IN THE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST?

COGIC CHURCH PROPERTY

In times past we the members of COGIC  were allowed to believe if there was no state or national monies put into a church it belonged to the local church.  THAT IS NOT TRUE!! Due to the lawsuit brought by Bishop Joseph C. Gilkey, (Kansas Southwest Jurisdiction) and the Church of God in Christ, INC (the named Plaintiffs), the Kansas Courts find the National Church to own all COGIC property.  Church of God in Christ, INC  the General Board is the board of directors for the corporation.  That means the Presiding Bishop a majority of the General Board along with Bishop Joseph C. Gilkey sued us  twice, went after back tithes and reports, and through the court required us to pay rent of $2000.00 a month on a building that we literally built.  The General Counsel for the COGIC, INC was the star witness and played an integral part in the seizure of this local church.   Now before you say that is not true read what the plaintiffs attorneys, one of them an ordained elder; Charles E. Watson II and now a pastor asked for;

  1. COGIC, INC believes it is entitled to back tithe
  2. COGIC, INC tried to get tithes and rent.
  3. COGIC, INC was denied back tithe but awarded rent on building built by local members

Charles E. Watson II                                                                    Bishop Joseph C Gilkey Sr.                                                General Counsel Enoch Perry III

  1. But what can be done officially to protect the church property from COGIC, but still fellowship with them. I don’t mind paying the applicable dues and stuff like that. I just want to protect the property in case our leader passes and people try to bully the saints, who have worked hard to leave something great for their children’s children. I know the “Black Book” sets guidelines, however if we at the local level, who built or purchased our church without the help of the COGIC, meaning our local trustee board is on record at the bank, county and state, IF WE INCORPORATED BY USING OUR CHURCH NAME MINUS THE COGIC AT THE END, USE OUR OWN TAX ID INSTEAD OF THE ONE PROVIDED BY NATIONAL, COULD WE PROTECT OUR ASSETS, AND STILL FELLOWSHIP WITH COGIC UNDER THE RADAR. I don’t want to leave COGIC, I just want to protect our properties.

    • The Black Book does not have all of the information they use against the local churches. They claim the amendments made in 1982 found in the Green and White Book makes the bishop the pastor as soon as the current pastor dies. There are three things the US Supreme Court allows states to look at when dealing with property issues. 1. Watson v. Jones (all property belongs to the National) that is why you hear them saying ” we are a hierarchical church. 2. The Neutral Policy, whoever is on the deed is the owner. 3. State law.
      You should find out which your state adheres to. There are many bishops, especially the new ones who want to see the deeds of the local church. This is what they are using to access the property, money, etc.
      The real fix, is to get Chairman Hunt and the General Assembly to pass the amendment which states, the LOCAL CONGREGATION owns the property. That is the only way to officially protect the church, other than that the integrity of your bishop is what you depend on. The National Church HAS NEVER SIDED WITH A LOCAL CHURCH. They will help the bishop take your property.

  4. I am a pastor and elder in this great COGIC…..ive been all of my life. I love the legacy and the original intent of Our sainted Father….Bishop C.H. Mason. I also must admit i am ashamed of the manner in which we are behaving. We’re not the same church but i believe that God’s hand is yet with our church. We need to stand up and speak up against unrighteousness and injustice in our church. There seems to be fear of leadership and as a result there is no accountability. Sounds like we need to stop dancing so much and start watching and correcting abuse of authority.
